Evidence of rare earth elements origin in acid mine drainage from the Iberian Pyrite Belt (SW Spain)

چکیده

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a worldwide pollution problem of watersheds. In addition to toxic metal(oid)s and acidity, many elements economic interest are released into the environment, which make AMD potential strategic secondary source these such as rare earth (REE). Despite importance metals, their origin in still uncertain. Recent hypotheses suggest preferential leaching REE-enriched minerals possible source. Leaching tests with H2SO4 have been developed simulate interaction under formation conditions sulfide bodies host rocks from two representative mining areas Iberian Pyrite Belt: Perrrunal Poderosa mines (SW Spain). The REE patterns Ce Eu anomalies rock leachates confirmed geochemical relationship between certain country (felsic mafic volcanics, shales). A detailed chemical mineralogical study has existence diversity high concentrations REE. Thus, highest contents also those fast dissolution kinetics acid conditions: phosphates (monazite xenotime type) carbonates (parisite type). Finally, petrographic evidence selective clearly supports main AMD.

Monitoring the Extent of Contamination from Acid Mine Drainage in the Iberian Pyrite Belt (SW Spain) Using Hyperspectral Imagery

Monitoring mine waste from sulfide deposits by hyperspectral remote sensing can be used to predict surface water quality by quantitatively estimating acid drainage and metal contamination on a yearly basis. In addition, analysis of the mineralogy of surface crusts rich in soluble salts can provide a record of annual humidity and temperature. In fact, temporal monitoring of salt efflorescence fr...

Pollution of a River Basin Impacted by Acid Mine Drainage in the Iberian Pyrite Belt (sw Spain)

The Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB) is one of the most famous sulfide mining regions in the world. Mining activity in the IPB dates back to prehistoric times, and though today there is no active mining, the pollution continues to generate. The result is acidic drainage containing elevated concentration of sulfate and heavy metals. This is responsible for the pollution and degradation of the Odiel Riv...

Passive treatment of Acid Mine Drainage with high metal concentrations: Results from experimental treatment tanks in the Iberian Pyrite Belt (SW Spain)

Passive treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD) have been applied successfully at many sites where metal concentrations are relatively low, but experience is scarce for waters with higher metal loads. In this study, we tested the suitability of caustic magnesia (MgO) as an alkaline reagent at field scale, with and without a prior calcite dissolution step. Three pilot systems where tested at the “...
